Valeria "Winky" Kane

September 26, 1933 — December 23, 2022

Weymouth

Valeria “Winky” (Mowbray) Kane passed away peacefully at home on December 23, 2022. Valeria was born, raised, and educated in Weymouth and graduated from Weymouth High School in 1951. After high school, she worked at the State Street Bank in Boston.  While raising her children, she worked various jobs, including working as a car hop at Richard’s Drive In restaurant located in Quincy for many years and as a lunch lady in Weymouth schools. She is predeceased by husbands Keith Powell and Edward "Eddie" Kane.

Valeria had many hobbies, including sewing, quilting, knitting, and baking. She was a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Weymouth and volunteered at the gift shop at South Shore Hospital. Valeria was a lover of all animals, especially cats. Above all, Valeria was a strong and graceful survivor; she won her battle with cancer twice in her lifetime, all while living with Parkinson’s disease for 30 plus years.

Valeria is survived by her loving children, Theresa Strug and her husband Stephen of Halifax, Neil Powell of Sandwich, Nancy Kane of Weymouth, Betsy Kane of Quincy, and Polly Colligan and her husband Eric of Whitman. Valeria is also "Grammie" to her grandchildren Jason, Kristen, Meghan, Lindsey, Ronald, Brian, Cameron, Daniel, and four great grandchildren Aiden, Evan, Ellie, and Quinn. She was also loved by many nieces and nephews.

Valeria is predeceased by her mother Valeria (Lawton) Durant, her father William Mowbray, her stepfather Joseph Durant, and sister Adella Jarvis.

Services for Valeria will be private. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Standish Humane Society of Duxbury

The Star

The lights went out on Earth for you

The day we said goodbye

And on that day a star was born,

the brightest in the sky

Reaching through the darkness

With its rays of purest white

Lighting up the heavens

As it once lit up your life

With beams of love to heal

The broken hearts you left behind

Where always in our memories

Your lovely star will shine
