Rita Shirley Smith (D'Allessandro), age 90, of Hingham and formerly of Weymouth passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. Rita was born and raised in Weymouth where she graduated Weymouth High in 1950. She married her husband, James, in 1953 and they started a family together in Weymouth where they had lived since.
Rita was best know for her culinary skills, anyone that tasted her food agreed she was an an extraordinary chef. Rita loved to entertain her family, her church family, and the whole neighborhood. Her door was always open for anyone in need. What ever that need may be. Rita taught her family and those around her to never pass judgement on others. Rita was a devote Catholic and an active member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Weymouth for over 50 years. She ended her career as the Rectory chef and manager. Rita loved to dance especially with her husband and she loved the color purple,traveling, singing, attending concerts and the theater.
Rita was predeceased by her husband James Smith and her daughter Theresa Sandsbury. She is survived by her loving children Rita Marie Smith of Canada, Fran Smith of Dorchester, and Cheryl and her husband Carl O’Neal of Brockton, her grandchildren Nicole, Jessica, Dee, Carl, Angela, Turita, and Aisha, and her great-grandchildren Dom, Anthony, Wyatt, Jett, and Greyson. And many nieces and nephews. Her greatest legacy is the unity, love and kindness she taught her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, which they are committed to live by. Rita also had many lifelong friends and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. The world is a better place because she was here.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visitation for Rita on Friday, December 15, 2023 from 4-8pm in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA. Friends will gather on Saturday Morning at 9:30am for a Celebration of Life prior to the funeral mass which will take place at Immaculate Conception Church in Weymouth at 10:30am. Burial will follow in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth. Family request visitors wear something purple to honor Rita on Saturday. Donations may be made in memory of Rita to the Weymouth Food Pantry at www.WeymouthFoodPantry.org.
