Michael Brendon Murphy of South Weymouth passed away on October 17, 2023, after a brief illness. Mike was born in Quincy Ma, raised and educated there and in Boston. He and his wife Ruth moved their family to Weymouth in the early 60's. Starting on Black Hawk Rd they moved to their Pine St "fixer upper" in 1968 which has been their home and family gathering place ever since.
Mike ran his own union electrical shop, M.B. Murphy Electric Co. Inc., working primarily in industrial and commercial settings. In the mid 1980's, he and Ruth, his wife and business partner, started Arbor Electronics specializing in security systems for bank offices and money handling computer rooms. This was at the very beginning of using card readers to enter rooms and businesses. From here, Mike branched out into energy management systems at major warehouses, cutting their energy costs by 50%. Mike gave up his electrical license at 82. He remained involved in electrical systems by designing and installing improvements to Old South Union Church's sound systems helped by his son in law, James Frogameni.
Mike served in Marine Corps Reserves, joining while still in high school with life long friend, Herb Pitts. He spent six years in the Corps as an aircraft electrician with 2 years active duty at Camp Lejuene, North Carolina where he taught electrical systems.
Mike was married to the love of his life, Ruth, until her passing in 2007. Ruth Margaret Murphy (nee Johnson) and Mike met while still in high school. Ruth, a Boston girl, and daughter of an electrical contractor, had a weekend home in Quincy's Hough's Neck. They met at the roller skating rink, Mike on motorcycle and Ruth in a poodle skirt.
Mike was a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts Troop based at Old South Union Church. He was also active with the Church's Youth Group participating in Ski Trips. Mike joined his wife's church, Old South, and participated in the M&M club, Joy Club, and Coffee Service on Sunday Mornings.
Mike and Ruth raised three children, Laura Frogameni of Northampton, MA, Diane Foster of Aspen, CO and Steve Murphy of Boston, MA. James Frogameni, Michael "Hutch" Foster and Sarah Wakabayashi are the partners of these three and Mike is also survived by four grandchildren, Rachel Grace Frogameni of Easthampton, MA, Elena Ruth Frogameni of Oxford, England, Willemina Murphy Wakabayashi of Norton, MA and Viviana Murphy Wakabayashi of Boston, MA. and a very loving granddog, Roo, who misses Mike very much.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a wake for Mike on Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 2-5pm, in the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St (Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth. A funeral service will be held the following afternoon at 2pm in the Old South Union Church, located at 25 Columbian St (Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mike's name to the Old South Union Scholarship Fund.
