Mary Fogarty (Clougherty), age 93, of South Weymouth passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024. Mary was raised in Savin Hill, Dorchester, and graduated from Dorchester High School for Girls in 1947. She received a BA in math from Emmanuel College in 1951. After college, she worked in Washington, DC in code breaking for the National Security Agency. While in college she met her future husband Edward Fogarty when they were both sorting mail in the Post Office at Christmas time. They were married in 1952 and lived in New York and New Jersey before returning to the Boston area and eventually settling in Weymouth.
Mary received her Master's Degree in education in 1958 from Boston State College and taught math in Boston and in Weymouth for many years at Weymouth South Junior High, the Weymouth High Schools, and Weymouth Evening High School. Teaching math was more than just a profession for Mary. It was her way of mentoring and inspiring youth and adults throughout the community and helping them to discover their own capabilities inside and outside of the classroom. Teaching for her was an act of love shared with whoever needed it.
Mary had diverse interests and was a voracious reader. She took up watercolor painting after retirement and with her husband, Ed, studied Koine Greek so that they could read the New Testament in the language in which it was originally written. Together they traveled to the UK, Ireland, Italy, the Canary Islands, the US Virgin Islands, Peru, Greece, Turkey, Morocco, and various places in the US and Canada, She also loved spending time with her family of whom she was so proud.
Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward L. Fogarty. She is survived by her daughters Katherine Fogarty of Dorchester and Roxana Llerena-Quinn and her husband Christopher of Newton, her grandchildren Adam Quinn (and his wife Kate) and Maria Quinn, and her great-grandchildren Sophia and Wyatt.
