Joan Burgess

Joan M Burgess passed away on June 20th of 2024 at the age of 92. Joan was born in Chelsea and graduated from East Boston High School in her junior year at age 16; she immediately was employed by New England Telephone and Telegraph. Over the years, she attended and took numerous courses at Boston universities and colleges. She became a bookkeeper for a few years. At age 21, Joan was hired by American Airline in New York and worked for AA Vanguard's Newsletter. After retirement from AA she took additional courses and went to work for the State Street Bank as an account controller, then for Gibbs-McAlister who eventually became J C Higgins and then Emcor Group in Stoughton from which she again retired after 15 years employed as a payroll administrator.

Joan volunteered for a variety of organizations giving many years at South Shore Elder Services in their Money Management Program, as a tax volunteer for the tax season, as well as in past years volunteering at South Shore Hospital. Joan was a devout Catholic and a member of the St Francis Xavier/ St Albert the Great Collaborative. In recent years she has served on the Divine Mercy Committee and arranged for a Divine Mercy Holy Hour every First Friday at St Francis Xavier Church. She also has been an active participant in the locally ongoing Arise Program. She traveled extensively while employed by American Airlines and in retirement. She enjoyed frequent luncheons and spending time with her family, friends, and acquaintances. 

Joan was the middle child of the late John G. and Mary M. (Napier) Trautz, of South Weymouth and her late siblings, Claire M. Stanley of South Weymouth and John G. Trautz Jr. of Halifax. She was the loving mother of David M. Burgess and daughter-in-law Christine A. of Middlefield, CT. She is survived by her niece, Denise M. Stanley of South Weymouth, Liza Trautz of Waleska, Georgia and nephew Wayne M. Stanley and wife Ann Marie of South Weymouth. She is also survived by her great niece, Courtni Stanley and great nephews, Sean Stanley and Evan Stanley. She will be missed by all. 

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visiting hours for Joan on Thursday, June 27, 2024 from 4-7pm in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA. Friends and family will gather the following morning at 9, in the funeral home for a Celebration of Life, prior to the Mass at St Francis Xavier Church at 10am. Burial will follow at 11:30am at Blue Hill Cemetery located at 700 West St, Braintree, MA 02184. In lieu of flowers, please remember Joan in your prayers.
