James "Jim" Powers

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a wonderful man; James T. Powers Sr. of Dorchester, South Weymouth and Abington. Jim passed away after a long illness on Thursday, August 10th, 2023.

Jim was a US Navy Veteran having proudly served on the destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy Jr DD 850. He met the love of his life Mary who he was happily married to for 65 years while stationed in Argentia, Newfoundland. Jim had a successful career of 35 years with British Airways. While with British Airways, he was honored with an MBE from her majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his service to the British Empire. He was also honored with the Cheverus Award from the Archdiocese of Boston for his service to the Catholic church. Jim loved the military, gardening, cooking, traveling, nature, politics and crosswords. He spent a long retirement in service to his church, volunteering at Holy Cross Retreat House and most importantly enjoying his family.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Mary (McGrath) Powers, and his nine children; Margaret Lyons (Thomas), Cheryl McInerney (Chris), James Powers Jr (Dorothy), Geraldine Hurley (Joseph), John Powers (Sandy), Carolyn Bennett (Arthur), Lisa Howland (John), Christine DeSouza (Cleber), Michael Powers (Christine), 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He is survived by his sister Nancy Creed, many cousins, nieces and nephews whom he loved. Predeceased by his parents, John and Bridget Powers, his brother John, and his sisters Joan Fasanello and Ellen Parker.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a visitation for Jim on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, from 3-7 in the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth. Relatives and friends will gather Thursday morning inside the funeral home for a Celebration of Life for Jim at 9:15am. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10am at Saint Albert the Great Church in East Weymouth. Burial will be private. Donations may be made to Saint Albert the Great Church in East Weymouth, or the Holy Cross Retreat House in Easton.
