Walter Butterworth, age 81, passed away Monday March 7, 2011 following a brave battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Arlene L. (Rago) and by 3 children; Paul S. Butterworth and his partner Andrew J. Hanes of Holliston, David Butterworth of Pembroke, Lisa Aleo and her husband Dr. Brian Aleo and their daughter Elizabeth A. of Lakeville. He is predeceased by his parents Walter J. and Helen E. (Kokkinen). Walter was born and raised in Quincy graduating from Quincy High School and Boston University. He served in the U.S. Army stationed in Germany from 1952 - 1954 during the Korean War. He had a 40 year career in banking starting in the accounting department of the National Shawmut Bank and retiring from the investment division of Shawmut-Fleet Bank. Walter, better known as Wally to family and friends, was known for his warm, welcoming smile and for characteristically whistling a tune as he attended to daily chores and projects around the house. As a drummer he loved listening to and playing jazz and could always be seen tapping his foot to the music. Wally particularly enjoyed time spent with family and friends at his Cape Cod home. His listening ear, generous spirit and loving nature will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Friday, March 11 at 10 A.M. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. Donations may be made in Wally’s memory to the South Shore Visiting Nurses Association, 100 Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA 02185-9060.
