Born February 15th 1925 to William and Mary Held in Bronx, New York August H. Held would soon become known to those who loved and respected him as “Gus.”
Gus lived a life so full of passion, determination, and accomplishments that his stories were often followed by his wife adding, “true story.” Few men have lived with such a powerful balance of strength and kindness. A friend to those who deserved unequivocal devotion and a force to those who would be naught to forget their follies, Gus was a role model and mentor who changed lives with every personal interaction. He dedicated his life to his country beginning with his enlistment in WWII through five campaigns in the Pacific. He leaves his lasting mark as an honorable disabled veteran, an admiral in the United States Volunteer Life Saving Corps, and a family’s personal hero.
Survived by his wife, and love of his life Winifred, siblings Lillian and Helen, three children Billy and his wife Paula, Claire and her husband Richard and Kathy and her husband Charles, grandchildren Christopher, Christine, Katherine and Kimberly, two and 1/3 great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Alison, and to be determined in May, and Carol, his niece who he thought of as a daughter. So many lives were touched by this man who gave so much of himself so easily to numerous nieces, nephews and friends who were always welcomed and treated like family.
Preceded in death by his brother Walter and sisters Dorothea and Freda.
Visiting will be at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth, MA on Saturday November 20 from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. immediately followed by a Funeral Service at 1 P.M. at the Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
