Newton W. Borden, inventor, aviator and WWII Silver Star recipient. After a lifetime spent building and creating, died on Friday at the age of 86 following a period of failing health. Devoted husband to his sweetheart Frances (Moeller), Mr. Borden lived with his wife in South Weymouth for over 60 years.
A master craftsman and innovator, Mr. Borden invented the first hand-held metal detector, created models and dioramas now in the Smithsonian Institute, restored cars, built and sailed boats, and after retirement built and flew an ultra-light airplane. After graduating from Stetson High School in Randolph, MA he enlisted and served in the army's Company C 543rd Engineer Amphibious Regiment during WWII as Seargent of a gunboat, earning a Silver Star among other honors.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Frances Borden, three children, Christine Borden of Framingham, David Borden of Washington, and Laurie Micarelli of Hingham; two brothers, Donald Borden of Randolph, and Earl Borden of Florida and his grandsons Matthew Borden and Christopher Micarelli. He was the son of the late Roy Borden and Christina (Mellish) Borden.
A Graveside service will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Wednesday, September 22 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Borden's memory to Doberman Rescue Unlimited, Inc. 52 Tenney Rd. Sandown, NH 03873 www.dru.org.
