Donald Chesley Cormack, 93, of Weymouth and Bryantville, died Saturday, February 21 at South Shore Hospital after a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Weymouth, Mr. Cormack was known throughout the community for his knowledge of town history. He was predeceased in 1998 by his wife of 59 years, Eleanor (Bicknell) Cormack.
Mr. Cormack was a life member and former President of the Weymouth Historical Society. He shared his passion for Weymouth history with many and for a number of years taught Weymouth history to hundreds of elementary school children who came to the Historical Museum at the Weymouth Library. He and his wife represented the Town of Weymouth at the anniversary of the founding of the town of Weymouth, England.
His career was spent in Boston’s wool import industry and he retired from the firm of Ott and Railsback. He graduated from Weymouth High School and received an Associates Degree from Boston University. In 1997 he was made a member of the Weymouth High Hall of Fame.
He was a lifelong member and former Board Chairman of the Universalist Unitarian Church in North Weymouth. A member of the Weymouth Kiwanis Club for 58 years he was honored with the Kiwanis International Tablet of Honor in 2000. He was also a member of Orphans Hope Masonic Lodge in Weymouth. Until his early 80s he walked annually in the Protestant Social Services fundraising walk in honor of his grandson Eric. He also volunteered in soliciting donations for the Pine Street Inn.
He is survived by his daughter Jean King of Watertown, Connecticut, his sister Murial Mottola of Hilton Head Island, North Carolina, and four grandchildren, Robert King, Adam King, Dawn Simmons and Eric Simmons. He was predeceased by his daughter Christine Simmons.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Weymouth, 83 Sea St. in Bicknell Square, North Weymouth. There are no visiting hours.
