Joseph J. Sloan Sr. passed away at the South Shore Rehabilitation Center in Rockland on February 1, 2009 at the age of 84. Joe is survived by his 6 children; Joseph J. Sloan Jr. of Plymouth, Georgia Richardson of Whitman, Terri Hickey of Weymouth, William Newell of S. Weymouth, Kathleen Newell Cunningham of Scituate and Wendell Newell of Bridgewater, 1 sister, Kay Dino of Arizona, 20 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren, 1 niece and 1 nephew. Mr. Sloan was born in Quincy and was a life long resident of Weymouth. After serving 13 years as a Seaman First Class in the Navy serving on the USS Mobile during World War 2 and 7 years as a Staff Sergeant in the Air Force , stationed at the US Air Force in Guam he received his High School Diploma in his 70’s from Weymouth High School on Veterans Day in 2002. He worked as a custodian at the South Junior High School and Union Street School in Weymouth for 21 years. Joe was a life member of the Whitman VFW Post 697 and a member of the Weymouth Senior Center Exercise Group. Friends and relatives are invited to the Funeral at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Thursday February 5 at 11 A.M. and the visiting hours on Wednesday from 2to4 and 7to9 P.M. Internment will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery in Braintree. Donations may be made in Joe’s memory to the South Shore Humane Society, P.O. Box 850187, Braintree, MA 02185.
