George C. Smith a former resident of S. Weymouth and a retired purchasing agent for the United States Department of Defense passed away following a long illness at the Harbor House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hingham on Sunday, April 5, 2008 at the age of 98. He was born in New Brunswick, Canada and came to the United States in his late teens. He was an Army Veteran of World War II serving in Europe. George attended Burdett College in Boston. Before moving to S. Weymouth 45 years ago, he had lived in Topsfield and Medford. Mr. Smith was the husband of the late Gladys (Shields) Smith and was predeceased by 1 son Gaynor Christopher Smith and his parents, George R. and Helena (Sharp) Smith. He was the brother of the late Fred Smith, Clarence Smith and Mary Parlee all of New Brunswick and the late Lawrence Smith and Agnes Alcorn of Westford. Mr. Smith is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Thursday April 10 at 10 A.M. and the visiting hours on Wednesday from 3 to 7 P.M. donations may be made in George’s memory to the Perkins School for the Blind, 175 N. Beacon St. Watertown, MA 02472-9982.
