Paul J. Leary the first Weymouth Town Council President and a life long resident of South Weymouth died at his home on October 16 with his family at his side at the age of 78. He was the Loving father of Paul Leary of Oakland, CA, Cathleen Guisti and her husband Ralph of Amherst, Suzanne Leary Ames and her husband Stephen of South Weymouth and John Leary and is wife Maribeth of Sutton the Grandfather of Rachel, Timothy, Emily and the late Ralph P. Guisti, Christopher, Jeremy and Rebecca Ames He was the Brother of Barbara Leary Scannell of South Weymouth and the late Carole Bennett of Hull and leaves many nieces and nephews. Mr. Leary was proud to be among a family of 5 generations in Weymouth. He was a Town Meeting Member for 30 years, a member of the Weymouth Democratic Town Committee since 1956 and was voted Democrat of The Year by CO-OP 8 in November of 1999, a member of the Board of Registrar of Voters and Secretary Treasurer of Massachusetts Construction Safety Congress. Paul was also a member of the Weymouth Board of Assessors from 1969 until 1999 and served as Chairman of the board from1971 through 1999. He was elected to the First Weymouth Town Council and was appointed the first President in 2000, and is the current Vice President of the Council. Mr. Leary became an Eagle Scout in Troop 8 in South Weymouth and was followed by his two sons Paul in 1980 and John in 1987 making the first father/sons combination in Troop 8. This was among one of his proudest accomplishments. He was a founding member of the St. Francis Xavier Knights of Columbus, a Member of the Weymouth Elks, a volunteer for Weymouth Meals on Wheels and an Army Veteran. A graduate of Weymouth High School and Northeastern University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Civil Engineering he became a 35 year employee of the Kemper Companies as a Professional Engineer. Friends and Relatives are invited to attend a Funeral from the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Saturday October 20 at 9 A.M. the Funeral Mass at the St. Francis Xavier Church 261 Pleasant St. S. Weymouth at 10 A.M. and the Visiting Hours Friday 3 to 7 P.M. Interment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Weymouth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Paul’s memory to the Meals on wheels at South Shore Elder Services, 159 Bay State Drive, Braintree, MA 02184.
