Joseph A. Chella, age 81, of S. Weymouth passed away on Monday, July 25, 2022 at home with his loving wife and family by his side. Joe was born and raised in Quincy Point. He attended Quincy HS prior to joining the Navy where he proudly served his country from 1958 – 62. During his deployment, Joe was assigned to the USS Glacier (ABG-4) where the crews motto was “can do!”. While on the USS Glacier Joe was awarded the Antarctic Service Medal and was lucky enough to explore parts of the arctic circle that had never seen ships before.
Joe married his beloved wife, Toni, in 1967. They started a family together in Quincy then settled in Weymouth where they have resided since and made many fond memories raising there family. Joe was in the Local 3 Bricklayers Union for over 50 years where he was a Master Craftsman.
Joe was very involved in BMX racing and various sports with his children, CB radios, drawing, and loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Gladys “Toni” (Hinds) Chella of S. Weymouth, his loving children Christine Chella of Weymouth and Joseph “JJ” Chella of CT, his grandchildren Paul, Garrett, and Samantha. Joe is also survived by his siblings Marie Kilrain, Paul Chella, and Ann Chella-Nigl, and many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the visitation for Joe on Saturday, July 30, 2022 from 10am-Noon in the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) Weymouth, MA. A funeral service will take place in the funeral home immediately following the visitation at Noon. Cremation will follow. Donations in memory of Joe may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.ALZ.org.
