Gloria L. Petersen, age 92, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2022 after suffering for a number of years with Alzheimer’s.
Gloria was born on March 17, 1930 in Brockton MA to the late Philomena (Guarino-Cyr) Cashin and Henry Cyr. She was a graduate of Brockton High School, class of 1948. After raising her children, she went on to earn her LPN from Henry O. Peabody School of Nursing. After graduation, she secured a position with Colonial Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where she remained employed for 21 years.
Gloria was passionate about her Catholic faith and was very involved with church activities. This provided her many opportunities to travel around the world on pilgrimages, especially to Israel. It was her strong faith in God that drew her to Jerusalem three times. She enjoyed being active and frequented the gym right into her 80’s. Some of her favorite interests included traveling, walking, reading, knitting, and doing crafts. After her retirement, she became more involved in community programs including working with children at William Seach School in Weymouth.
Shortly after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2013, she moved from her home of 62 years in Weymouth to Grove Manor Estates in Braintree until her illness progressed and her care was continued at John Adams Healthcare Center in Quincy. Gloria will be missed by family and friends but they take comfort knowing that she is now at peace.
Gloria is survived by her six children: Jane E. Sullivan of Weymouth, John L. Petersen of Powell, TN, Marilyn A. Morway of Braintree, Maria D. Mani of Weymouth, Teresa R. “Sandi” Sarno of Weymouth, and Michael S. Petersen of Acton, Maine; her sister Julia Fratalia of Brockton; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Herbert L. Petersen, her son Kenneth Crosby, Jr., her sister Teresa DuVal and her brother Leon Cyr.
Funeral services are in the care of C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home located in Weymouth. Gloria will be laid to rest in Fairmount Cemetery at a private graveside ceremony.
