James Stoddard Gould, Jr, age 89, of Weymouth, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, August 26th, 2015.
Jim was born, raised, and educated in Quincy. He enlisted in the Army at 17, to serve in WWII. Post-War, Jim became a skilled automotive mechanic. He owned and operated Tower Automotive, on Adams Street in Quincy, for over 40 years before selling the business to retire in 2000.
Jim met Alba, his wife of 69 years, in Florence, 1945. It was WWII, and Jim was working for the Americans as a communications specialist; Alba was working for the British communications office. Alba got Jim’s attention when she prevented American soldiers from sending personal communications using work resources. Jim decided to investigate and liked whom he encountered. A year later, on May 8, 1946, Jim and Alba were married in Rome. They lived in Italy over a year, and gave birth to their eldest child, Loretta, while in Italy.
Jim loved gardening and all water activities: boating, fishing, water skiing, para-sailing, and scuba diving with his brothers for lobster. Jim also loved traveling and Italy, and he made sure his wife, and children, visited and stayed connected to the family in Italy.
Jim will be remembered for his ability to fix anything mechanical, and for his caring, generous, and dare devil nature. Jim will also be remembered for his integrity, and the kindness he showed his customers, at Tower Automotive. He ran a trustworthy business; and often helped elder and widowed customers, discounting repair rates and plowing their driveways during snowstorms.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Alba Gould (Rossi) of Weymouth; his loving children, Loretta Lamb and her husband Al of Maine, Sandra Fleischmann and her husband Gus of New Mexico, and Richard Gould of Weymouth; his cherished grandchildren, Charlz, Jenny, Ananda, Patrick and Sarah; and his great-grandchildren, Isabella and Mervin. The family wishes to also acknowledge ex-“daughter in law” Cheryl Snyder of Abington, for her friendship and support.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the visiting hours for Jim on Monday, August 31, 2015, from 6-8 PM, at the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, located at 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.), South Weymouth.
Relatives and friends will gather at 10 AM in the funeral home, for a funeral service, the morning of Tuesday September 1st, 2015.
Burial will immediately follow at the MA National Cemetery in Bourne.
