David C. Scannell, Weymouth, age 58, passed away at Marina Bay Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on August 17th after 19 years in a coma, the result of a traumatic brain injury sustained when he was struck by a drunk driver while riding his bicycle.
David grew up in Weymouth, attended St. Francis Xavier School and South Weymouth High School. David was a man of many talents – he excelled as an artist, a gymnast, a diver, a skier, a cyclist, a runner, a clown, a unicyclist, and a juggler, with an endless supply of energy and enthusiasm. He was a gentle soul with a huge heart and he loved entertaining at Faneuil Hall Marketplace. His bicycle was his sole means of transportation and he and it were as one.
David was the beloved son of Barbara Leary Scannell and the late David H. Scannell; dear brother of the late Paul D. Scannell, John (Jay) Scannell, Peter Scannell, Christopher Scannell, Elisabeth Scannell Stieb and her husband Jeffrey, Jeffrey Scannell and his wife Janell, and Timothy Scannell and his wife Christa. He is survived by one niece, Fiona Scannell, and ten nephews, Joseph, Matthew and Andrew Stieb, Jake Scannell, Paul Scannell, Shane and Jack Scannell, and Matthew, Thomas, and James Scannell.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday August 21st from 4pm to 8pm at the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) South Weymouth. Relatives and friends will gather for a celebration of life at the Funeral Home on Saturday August 22nd at 10am prior to the a Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant St., South Weymouth on 11am.
David’s family wishes to extend its gratitude to the staff at Marina Bay Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the superb care they have given David over the last ten years.
