On the morning of August 13, 2015, Malcolm Philip McLellan, Jr., passed away peacefully at his home in South Weymouth, comforted by his devoted wife and children. He was 92 years old.
Malcolm was born on June 15, 1923 in Boston, MA to the late Ronaldsa (Nichols) and Malcolm McLellan, Sr. He graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1941.
Malcolm entered the U.S Army in August 1943. He went on to Radio School in Sioux Falls, SD and Flexible Gunnery School in Yuma, AZ. During combat missions in WWII, he acted as radio operator mechanic and waist gunner, receiving, transmitting and logging all communications during takeoff and landing. Malcolm flew 18 missions and by VE Day, was on a ferry heading to the Isle of Capri.
After returning from the war, he graduated from Boston State College in 1951 and worked for 32 years as a teacher at the Gavin School in Boston, teaching metal shop.
In 1947, Malcolm met and fell in love with Mary Cushing. After many ice-cream dates, they married on January 8, 1949. They went on to raise six children. Together they enjoyed traveling to NH, twice drove cross-country to NM, and to beautiful Prince Edward Island.
Malcolm was a simple man with an extraordinary mind. From the beautiful woodwork in his home, to custom pieces of furniture, if he didn’t already know how to build it, he would teach himself by reading. Malcolm remained interested in science and technology until the end, keeping up with his grandchildren on social media. He also loved listening to music and reading. And you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone more informed about politics or more passionate about his love of his country.
Malcolm is survived by his large and loving family. His wife of 67 years, Mary, and his children, Laure Houston and her husband Michael of Rockland, Roderick and his wife Nora of Rockland, JoAnne Cook and her husband Gary of Plymouth, Douglas and his wife Carole of Abington, Samuel and his wife Monica Pereira of Little Compton, RI, and Andrew and his wife Nicole of Rockland. He is also survived by the 17 luckiest grandchildren in the world: Benjamin, Suzanne, Austen, Allison, Jacob, Aaron, Jennette, Gregory, Samantha, Melissa, Amanda, Rachel, Colleen, Hannah, Molly, Sophie and Sarah, plus 12 great-grandchildren. Malcolm will also be missed by his sisters Dora Cox of South River, NJ and June Visser and her husband Sandy of Quincy, MA, as well as many friends, neighbors, nieces and nephews.
