Joseph A. Zanghi age 92, a longtime resident of Roslindale, died peacefully after a short illness on June 11, 2014 at his home. Born June 14, 1921 Joe was most commonly referred to as “Uncle Joe”. Joe was the son of Guiseppi and Mary Zanghi of Boston and brother of the late Frances E Bailey of Weymouth, MA.
Joe’s college education at Boston University was interrupted by his service in the 9th US Army Air Force during World War II. He was assigned to the 575th Bombardment Squadron and stationed in England, France, and Belgium. Upon his return he completed his education at Boston University and graduated in the Class of 1948. Joe worked at the Red Sox ball games, tested concrete for bridge construction on the MA Turnpike and completed a short assignment with the U S Postal Service. In December of 1956 he joined with his sister Frances Bailey and her husband Ray and established Bailey’s Package Store in Columbian Square, South Weymouth. The store has been continuously operated by family members ever since. Joe commuted from his home in Roslindale to the store 3 to 4 times a week until May 2014.
Joe loved Boston sports, but especially his Red Sox. He held a season ticket package with his grand nieces and nephews since 1976. He also loved horse racing especially at Saratoga, NY.
Joe is survived by, nieces Patricia M. MacIntyre and her husband Daniel and Joanne Bailey Kehlbeck and her husband William, both of Weymouth. He is also survived by six grand nephews; Michael F. MacIntyre of Seattle, WA, John J. MacIntyre, Peter A. MacIntyre, David C. MacIntyre, and Nicholas A. Kehlbeck of Weymouth and three grand nieces, Elizabeth A. MacIntyre, Joanna M. MacIntyre, and Natalie B. Kehlbeck all of Weymouth.
The Funeral will be from the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Monday June 16 at 9 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at St. Albert the Great Church, 1140 Washington St. Weymouth at 10 AM. Visiting Hours will be on Sunday 4 to 7 PM.
