Robert James Mattsson “Bob”, age 87, passed away on Monday January 27 after a long illness.
Bob was born in New Bedford the son of the late Carl T. Mattsson Sr. and Florence (Irwin) Mattsson and is survived by sisters Barbara Johnson and Marilyn Sullivan and her husband, Francis of Dartmouth, several nieces and nephews , special niece Diane Walsh and her husband, Dr. Stanley Walsh of Freetown and special friend Dessie Auger of Shreveport , LA. He is predeceased by his brothers, Carl Jr, Harold and William, his brother in law Erik Johnson, his sister in law, Eva Mattsson and his great nephew, Michael Walsh.
He was an educator for 37 years and retired from Quincy School system and previously taught in Dartmouth MA. Hamilton, MA, Barnstead, NH, California, Japan and Bermuda.
Bob served his country in the Navy during World War II. He was an avid sports fan of all sports from high school to pro teams. His favorite was going to either dog or horse races.
He was a member or past member of the Quincy Retirees Association, the American Legion Post #79, the Quincy Retired Teachers Association, the Weymouth Democratic Committee and the Quincy Retired Teachers Scholarship Committee (Treasurer for 18 years).
A memorial service will be held on Saturday March 15 at 11 AM at the Old South Union Congregational Church, 25 Columbian St. S. Weymouth. Burial will be private at the South Dartmouth Cemetery.
