Florence (Pinkham) VanLeuvan, age 91,of Hingham passed away on Friday January 17 of leukemia, which she had battled for several years. She was the widow of Dr. Daniel L. VanLeuvan, Professor Emeritus of Nichols College, Dudley, MA and the mother of son Neil VanLeuvan of Norwell, MA, daughter Gail Annese of Attleboro, MA. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Daniel and Emily VanLeuvan of Norwell, MA, Joseph Annese of Portland, Oregon, and Lauren Annese of Attleboro, MA.
Florence grew up in Huntington, Long Island, where she was the senior class valedictorian and graduated from the State University of New York at Albany, where she received her BA and Library Science degrees. She was the librarian of Riverhead High School, Riverhead, NY; assistant librarian of Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY; Air Force librarian in post-war Germany; and staff librarian of Eastern Air Defense Force, Newburgh, NY. After marriage, she returned to the high school setting as librarian of Pearl River High School, Pearl River, NY and Shepherd Hill Regional High School Library, Dudley, MA. In 1986, after retirement, she moved to Palm Coast, FL for several years before returning to New England. She moved to Linden Ponds, Hingham, from Plymouth, MA in 2005. During retirement she did volunteer work in church and public libraries in communities where she lived.
Florence was active during her lifetime in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Association of University Women, and the Retired Educators Society of Massachusetts. She was an avid reader and also traveled widely in Europe, Canada, the Caribbean, and the United States.
The funeral service will be private, for family only, with no calling hours, at the C.C. Shepherd Funeral Home, South Weymouth, MA. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Kennebunk, ME.
