Mary Elizabeth Lynch

d. September 13, 2013

Mary Elizabeth Lynch. A special friend has left us and returned home to God on Friday September 13. Mary Elizabeth Lynch was born in Arlington in 1923 to Thomas Frank and Mary Catherine (Howard) Lynch. Predeceased by her brother Howard, Bettie would have been ninety in October. She grew up in the Boston area, graduating from Mission High and Fay Secretarial. She worked through the war for the Army Air Corps, the FBI and The Boston Post and after the war in France. She returned home, went back to school, earning bachelor and master’s degrees at Boston College and Boston University. She taught at Dorchester High for twenty-five years, retiring in 1989 to Cape Cod. She became involved in her community, volunteering for the town of Yarmouth, at Cape Cod Hospital, and at her church. A voracious reader of all types of literature, it was normal for her to have half a dozen books from the library at a time, until she lost her sight. Bettie loved to travel and leaves behind many friends near and far. Her dogs were her kids, adopted from nearby shelters. She went one time to the SPCA to find a small dog, and came home with a 12-year old, hundred-pound husky who she brought with her when she moved to Linden Ponds in 2008. When Bettie was told she had advanced lung cancer, she accepted it with dignity and grace. She is survived by a cousin, many friends and her lab “Jessie” all who will miss her deeply. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church in Weymouth on Thursday, September 19 at 10 am followed by a reception in the Seasons Room at Linden Ponds. Burial will be private. We thank all who cared for Bettie and loved her during her illness, especially the medical staff at Rose Court. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of one’s choice. To leave a message please click on the candle.
