Charles “Dean” Vaughan, age 88, passed away at the Weymouth Health Care Facility on Monday, August 26, 2013. Charles was predeceased by his wife Ruth Elaine (Johnson) Vaughan and is survived by his 4 daughters, Penelope King of Hingham, Gayle Hicks of Abington, Rebecca Davis and her husband Daniel of Raleigh, NC and Gweneth Ballard and her husband James of Whitman, MA. He also leaves his grandchildren Greg, Kristyn, Geoffrey, Matthew, Pamela, Thomas, Bryan and Emily, eight great grandchildren and a brother, Peter G Vaughan and his wife Philippa of Quincy, MA.
Charles was born in Boston, MA, grew up in Wollaston and was a resident of South Weymouth for over 60 years. Charles proudly served his Country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II as a ball-turret gunner in a B-24 Bomber throughout the South Pacific as part of the 13th “Jungle” Air Force, 307th Bomb Group “Long Rangers”, 371st Bombardment Squadron. He received a Veteran’s Diploma from Quincy High School on November 9, 2000.
After WWII, he began a successful career as a Fire Prevention Engineer for Northeast Sprinkler Co., Rockwood Sprinkler, and Automatic Sprinkler Co. designing fire sprinkler systems for facilities in the Boston and New England area until his retirement in 1990. He was a member and past Commander of the George R. Bean Post 401 in South Weymouth, and a Weymouth Farm League Coach. He enjoyed the Mr. and Mrs. Club with his wife as a member of the Old South Union Church in South Weymouth. He was an avid reader and crossword puzzle enthusiast. He also enjoyed many vacations at Disney World with his family and grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq.) S. Weymouth on Friday August 30 at 10 AM. Visiting Hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 PM.
