Shannon Katherine Smith, age 32, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, June 5th. She is survived by her parents Richard W. and Mary Jane Sullivan Smith of South Weymouth, MA, her sister Deirdre A. Smith of Somerville and her brother Patrick T. Smith of Burlington, VT. She also leaves behind her dear friend Christopher Strunk.
Shannon was raised in South Weymouth and recently lived in Jamaica Plain, MA. She was a 1999 graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, 2003 graduate of Columbia University in New York City, and 2011 graduate of the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee where she attended a masters program in English and Library Science and was a teaching assistant. She received several academic scholarships during her academic career.
For the past two years she was employed in the oncology research department of the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, as a grant management specialist.
Prior to entering the University of Wisconsin, Shannon taught English as a foreign language in Leszno, Poland and Daegu, South Korea, and had worked at the Harvard School of Public Health in the grants research department.
Shannon loved music and had performed both in groups and as an experimental soloist. She was also an accomplished fiction writer.
The Funeral will be from the C. C. Shepherd Funeral Home, 134 Pleasant St. (Columbian Sq) S. Weymouth on Wednesday, June 12 at 9 AM followed by the Funeral Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church, 234 Pleasant St. S. Weymouth at 10 AM. Visiting Hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 P.M.
