Elizabeth P. “Bettie” True age 97, lived independently in her own home in Weymouth, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013. She was predeceased by her parents, Herbert M and Florence (Pierce) True and is survived by good friends and her cousin, Harold Fogg of Duxbury.
She attended Weymouth Schools and then went on to Emerson College in Boston. In the second term of her senior year at Emerson, she was accepted for graduate study at Boston University and enrolled in the masters of Arts Program, specializing in literature and writing. Later she changed to the Boston University School of Education and received a Master of Education Degree in 1946.
In the fall of 1940, along with the Speech Therapy work she began a Teacher Training Program at Adams School in Weymouth Heights. In the fall of 1941, she was appointed as a teacher of grade 2 at the John Adams School.
In her 39 years of teaching, Ms. True touched the lives of over 1700 students. She was a member of the Weymouth Teachers’ Association, Massachusetts State Teachers, and the National Education Association. For a time she was a member of the local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, a national honor society for key women educators.
After retirement, until 2006, she worked for many years as a Volunteer Chaplain Aide at South Shore Hospital. She called this work the most rewarding of all other work experiences. She attended Union Congregational Church of East Braintree and Old South Union Church of South Weymouth.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Old South Union Chapel, 25 Columbian St., S. Weymouth on Thursday, January 31, at 10 A.M. Donations may be made in Bettie’s memory to the Friends of South Shore Hospital, 55 Fogg Rd., S. Weymouth, MA 02190.
