Frederick L. Smith

d. September 25, 2012

Frederick Ladner Smith, 91 years old, went home to meet his Savior on September 25, 2012, after a lifetime of sharing the love of God and the power of the Gospel with all those he met. He is survived by his wife, Monique, and was predeceased by his first wife Marion (Close) Smith. He was the truly beloved father of four daughters, Alleah Nottage and her husband Michael of Hingham, Lorraine Colligan and her husband Bud of Bourne, Beverly Trice and her husband Martin of Quincy and Ruthanne Mann and her husband David of Weymouth. He was Grampy to 6 grandchildren, Ryan, Sarah, Ian, Andrew, Margaret and Isaac. He also had 2 step-grandchildren, Hannah and Taylor and one great-grand daughter, Julianna.
Raised in Weymouth, he was one of eight children born to Lloyd and Effie (MacKenzie) Smith. He was the cherished brother of Mary, Anne, Donald, Lloyd, Kathryn and Dorothy who predeceased him. His youngest sister, Phebe Dagley, survives him. He also leaves many loving nieces and nephews.
During the Depression, when work was hard to find, Fred traveled to Colorado to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he left Weymouth to help in the repair and salvage of the remaining fleet. While there, he joined the Merchant Marines, participating in many dangerous convoys, including service to his country off the coast of France during the D-Day invasion.
A painting contractor by trade, he will always be remembered for his deep faith in God and service to his church, First Baptist Church of Weymouth, where he served as an elder, deacon and beloved Sunday school teacher. After retiring, he had two more careers, as a chaplain with Community Chaplain Services and then as the Pastor of Visitation for his church. Countless people were touched by his ministry.
Burial will be private. Friends are invited to a celebration of Fred’s life at a Memorial Service to be held at First Baptist Church, 40 West Street, Weymouth, on Saturday, October 20, at 11:00 a.m. Donations may be made to the Deacon’s Fund at the church.
